Kanawayitowin, Babysitter Course, Home Alone Course
The Home Alone Course is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when left home alone for short periods of time. The course is designed to help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them safe and occupied.
The Babysitter training Course is an ideal program which can help prevent injuries and promote the responsible management of common situations that may arise while children are under the care of babysitters. Babysitter Course participants will learn basic first aid training along with the skills needed to care for children of all ages.
Kanawayhitowin is a Cree word, which translates to “taking care of each other’s spirit”. When we are born our spirits are pure and whole. As we journey through our time on earth, our spirit may encounter abuse and neglect. Everyone has the right to have their spirit protected and the responsibility to take care of the sacredness of life.
Kanawayhitowin is an Indigenous campaign to raise awareness about the signs of woman abuse in our communities. This campaign focuses on ending the isolation abused women feel. It emphasizes the empowerment of Indigenous men to take responsibility and make change. Program leaders incorporate a variety of educational and awareness raising activities and materials (brochures, PSA’s, training video, CD ROM.) This includes guidelines on how to implement in your community and provides information about warning signs and safety planning.
This campaign has been adapted from the Neighbours, Friends and Family initiative in the province of Ontario to reflect a traditional and cultural approach to community healing and wellness.
